December 29, 2009: American Electric Gives Lucky Winner Free Electricity for 2010

Honolulu, HI – At the 45th Annual Food & New Products Expo in October, Jean M. Rasor, 65, stopped by the American Electric booth and dropped his name into the drawing for free electricity for a year. Yesterday, American Electric Chairman Bob Dewitz wrote out a check to Rasor in the amount of $2,400 to help pay for his electricity costs for all of 2010.

"I was very surprised and excited," said Rasor of Hawaii Kai, when told of his win. "My wife was very happy." After nearly 40 years with Hawaiian Airlines, Rasor retired a year ago and welcomes the winnings while living on a fixed income. He estimates that the monthly energy bill for his family home is roughly $300. Commenting on his efforts to reduce energy usage he said, "We put in a solar hot water heater about five years ago, and I have also been exploring PV systems." Because photovoltaic technology has been improving, Rasor said the chances of him investing in a PV system are "extremely good."

"American Electric's decision to become a provider of PV systems means that Hawaii residents who are serious about solar have a trusted contractor to call on," said Dewitz. American Electric, Hawaii's largest, locally owned commercial electrical contractor, recently added solar energy services to their Residential Services division.
